Dr. Stormberg describes psychotherapy as a process which accelerates a person’s effectiveness and healthy functioning in the world s/he lives in. At the foundation of this process is a genuine trust and respect, one that allows opportunities for exploring your personal resources and strengths, habits of behavior, internal conflicts, disruptions of self-concept or attachment, familiar ways of thinking and relating, or desire to continue on the path you have chosen. Psychotherapy creates new distinctions about you behavior and world view so as to act and view your self, relationships, and circumstances in new ways. Dr. Stormberg’s approach is what Carl Jung described as “a practical psychotherapy to fit people for life.”

Dr. Stormberg has been trained in both traditional psychotherapy and psychotherapeutic theories and approaches, as well the theories and approaches of the field of Marriage and Family Therapy. This acadenic and clinical training and 20 years of experience allows Dr. Stormberg to draw upon very diverse sources of knowledge for understanding the presenting problem and symptoms, diagnosis, and implementation of an effective course of treatment. Dr. Stormberg also provides and recommends a variety of complimentary resources for enhancing the individual’s or couple’s progress in treatment. These may include bibliotherapy, marriage retreats, alternative medicine referrals (chiropractic, massage therapy, yoga, etc.), exercise recommendations, medical referrals, parenting radio shows, and other resources.

Child and Adolescent

Dr. Stormberg utilizes a variety of clinical interview techniques and clinical instruments to provide assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning for your child or adolescent. Initial assessments always involve the clinical interview of the child, consultation when appropriate, the parent(s), other significant people in the child’s life, including siblings, teachers, and others. Additionally, Dr. Stormberg may utilize such projective techniques as play therapy strategies, and instruments such as the Kinetic Family Drawing. Also utilized are adult self-report instruments such as the Connors Scale, and psychometric instruments such as the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children and the Parenting Stress Index. Collecting other information from other professionals involved in the child’s life will also be obtained during the initial phase of assessment and treatment. Dr. Stormberg does not offer formal psychological testing.

Dr. Stormberg has been trained in both traditional intra-psychological as well as inter-psychological theories and approaches. This means that a child’s presenting symptoms may be understood within the child him/herself, for example, biologically and/or psychologically, and within the context of the child’s environment, including the family system, parent-child relationship, peer relationship, school, and community. What results is the creation of an understanding of the presenting symptoms which may require interventions with the child, the parental subsystem, the family system, peer and school systems, or other environments such as a daycare, rec center, employment, or athletic environments.
